The levels are also well presented, with the graphics as well as impressing visually also having a unique charm about them, a charm also found in titles like Beyond Good and Evil. And there's a real joy to discovering a monkey named after you. Half the monkeys are pop culture references, from Star Wars to early 90s dance group Snap. All the monkeys have a name, and a description. The monkeys themselves are very likable, especially when they dress up for various stages, like disco-dancing, afro-wearing monkeys in the 70s themed stage. The characters are full of personality, even if they ultimately caricatures like the bumbling professors and the moody teenager. The second thing to like is the presentation. It's really very simple, even if most of the gadgets are borrowed from the original. And if you're using the net, simply move the stick in the direction you want the net to swing. If you're using a hula hoop, moving the stick in a circle will create a forcefield around your character. If you're using a catapult, pull back the right stick, aim and release it to fire. But it's the innovative control methods that really shine. Gadgets can be mapped to a 'shape' button or selected via the pause menu, which is actually less annoying than it sounds. So far, so humdrum, but the fun comes with the right stick, which uses the gadget you're holding. You run around with the left stick, with jumping on R1. So what makes this game so likable? First, the control system. Although it's now a little dated, it retains it's unique charm and, more importantly, sense of sheer fun, years after it lit up my life. This game was one of the PS2's greatest platformers when released. If not, there's not much point in getting it. If you liked the original, you should rent this. Great, huh? WRONG!!!!!!!! You will get hundreds of coins, resulting in 45 minutes of unlocking stuff such as "clip art" and "Monkey Fables" (!!!?) In all fairness, you do also get new RC cars and some mini-games, but that's all. SNIFF In the game, you can gather coins you can use to buy bonuses. The "secret" gadget was the same as the original, so I was disappointed. the kind, you use it once in one level and you never use it again. of game time, so older gamers may feel cheated.(like i did) The bosses were WWAAAYYYY too easy.(If Specter's helmet makes him so smart, why did I beat him so easily?!!) Some of the powerups were useless. I caught every single monkey in less than 30 hr. finally, catching monkeys in a net is just plain fun. The graphics are much better than the original and the controls are intuitive. Old powerups from the original plus some new ones add a nice game experience. There are 300 something monkeys, so you will have plenty to do. You'll see puns in the monkey names from the beginning. Console Generation Exclusives: PlayStation 2.Some monkeys just sit on their place, while others attack you with projectiles or run away quickly. All monkeys in the levels are somewhat unique with their own character abilities and their unique name. Other gadgets include a RC Car, to drive over monkey's and collect objects, an Ape Radar, to detect the nearest monkey, a baseball bat, to hit monkeys unconscious, and a magnet, to move certain objects in the maps. In this platform game it's your goal to catch all the apes jumping, walking and flying around the diverse levels the game has to offer.Ī large arsenal of gadgets can be used to make it all a little easier, with the catching net being the most important weapons of them all.
